FC Barcelona have been playing at a very good level since the start of this season. The Blaugrana team has won all of its La Liga matches up to now and has also put on some very entertaining displays, including the 7-0 win against Real Valladolid and the 4-1 win over Girona.

However, the team still has some weaknesses that can cost them as they go deeper into the season. One of the clearest of these weaknesses is in the midfield, where there is no natural and experienced pivot option available.

Oriol Romeu left Barcelona in the last summer transfer window, and Marc Bernal was the starting pivot for Flick at the start of this La Liga campaign. However, his ACL injury put him on the sidelines for around one year, and there is a need for another midfield pivot in the squad.

One of the candidates who has been linked with Barcelona for quite some time now is the Bayern Munich player, Joshua Kimmich. He is one of the best options available in the market, and he will be a particularly attractive option for the Catalans as he can arrive as a free agent next year.

However, as Mundo Deportivo has noted, some recent comments from the Bayern Munich Sporting Director and the player himself provide hints that he might be getting near to a contract renewal with the Bavarian club.

Max Eberl, the Bayern Sporting Director, commented on Kimmich before his side’s match against Holstein Kiel in which he said: “Kimmich must be one of the club’s key figures in the future.”

On the other hand, Kimmich, himself was asked whether he was open to negotiating a renewal with Bayern, to which he gave a short but clear reply: “Yes, I am open.”

These new positions of Bayern and Kimmich show an increasing openness from both sides to reach an agreement. The renewal operation has stalled for quite some time now, but as the player has already entered his last year, time is running out if these two parties want to continue working together.
