The urgency at FC Barcelona dictates that the Catalans must quickly find a solution to their vacancy at the central defensive midfielder position following the departure of their previous captain and club legend, Sergio Busquets.
Despite weeks having gone by linking Barcelona to various top-level defensive midfielders such as Joshua Kimmich, Sofyan Amrabat, Martin Zubimendi, and Marcelo Brozovic in recent weeks, the Catalans are yet to find an arrival in order to complete Xavi’s squad.
However, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are making headway in the operation to bring back a familiar face to the Catalan side, that being of Oriol Romeu from fellow La Liga side Girona.
A player who hails from Barcelona’s own youth academy and had appeared for the Catalans in official games, albeit only a few, all the way back in the 2010/2011 season. Since then, he has played in various leagues across Europe including both the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga.
The player now awaits information directly from Barcelona with the report suggesting that he has been informed by his current club that offers for him will soon be arriving.
Xavi Hernandez remains in a hurry to bring in a defensive midfielder before pre-season begins, and given the club’s current economic conditions, he believes Romeu to be a low cost alternative that is also familiar with the Barcelona play style.
Despite hesitation from some in the Barcelona camp, as they believe waiting a bit longer in order to pursue a more elite option with better experiences would be ideal, the Catalan club’s higher-ups seem to be giving in to Xavi’s insistence and looking to bring in the La Masia graduate.
