The FC Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso celebrated his 33rd birthday on Thursday, but this would definitely have been one of the more forgettable anniversaries for the Spaniard.

Alonso has been unavailable for Xavi for the last five games due to back problems, and as previously reported here, was expected to make a decision about his preferred recovery method today.

According to Diario AS, the defender has now made up his mind to go through surgery to mitigate the problems in his lower back and is currently waiting to know the day and time when this intervention will be scheduled.

The report mentions that the medical officials have convinced the Spaniard to go through surgery to get rid of his back problems, from which he has been suffering for a long time and the problem is becoming chronic now.

He can follow the footsteps of Ter Stegen in this regard, and can also get treated by the same surgeon who operated on the German goalkeeper.

Once this surgery has been undertaken, the defender will have to rest for at least two months, and he is expected to be fully fit only at the start of March, as he will also need some time to get back into shape after the resting period.

This back problem thus further worsens an already underwhelming season for Alonso, as he is the player with the fewest minutes (299) this season. As the club has played 24 official matches this season, Alonso’s participation rate comes at only 14%.

Such a secondary role in the squad and the fact that he will be unavailable till March makes it a very gloomy scenario for the defender’s aspirations of getting a renewal to his contract that ends next summer.

Thus, Marcos Alonso can be one of the first players who depart from Barcelona at the end of this season, while the future of Sergi Roberto is also highly uncertain at the moment.
