Barcelona veteran’s renewal deal includes a clause to extend the contract for one more season

Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto

FC Barcelona reached a verbal agreement with one of the club captains and old guards, Sergi Roberto for a contract renewal which would see the veteran continue at the club for one more season with an option to extend the contract for another year if some variables are met.

Hailing from the famous La Masia academy, the Spaniard has been a key figure at the club notably as a fringe player. He is very versatile, as he can fit in as the right back too when needed, apart from his natural position as a midfielder.

He has had some key moments as a backup option, scoring the winning goal in the historical La Remuntada against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and playing the pivotal part in Messi’s last-minute goal at Bernabeu which secured the win by a 3-2 margin.

For a squad player, he is not a bad option, as his offensive capabilities are mostly unnoticed due to him being deployed in his subsidiary roles mostly. His experience can be the key, and he can play in less important matches for the club as well.

The 31-year-old midfielder has been a loyal servant to FC Barcelona for countless years, and he can surely provide the team with the depth required to cycle through opponents who are comparatively easy to face.

As per the reports from SPORT, there is a clause in Sergi Roberto’s renewal agreement to extend the contract for an additional year, which will be triggered if he manages to play 60% of the matches in which he is available, which will be considered if he stays on the pitch for at least 45 minutes. If the requirement is fulfilled, the La Masia graduate shall continue at the club till the summer of 2025.
