FC Barcelona are scheduled to kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign this Tuesday with the match against Royal Antwerp. The Catalans will be looking to start their campaign with a victory to ensure they can progress to the next round of the tournament, something they have not been able to do in the last two of its editions.
In addition to being the opening match of the campaign, this match has the potential to be a memorable event for a number of Barcelona players, as has been noted by SPORT.
Potential records for Yamal
Lamine Yamal has been breaking records ever since debuting for Barcelona, and recently he also became the youngest player to debut and score a goal for the Spanish National Team as well. If he plays in the match against Antwerp, Yamal will also become the youngest player to play in the Champions League for Barcelona.
However, he will not become the youngest player to play in the Champions League, as Youssoufa Moukoko debuted at the age of 16 years and 18 days for Borussia Dortmund in 2020, while Yamal is already 16 years and 68 days old.
However, he can become the youngest player ever to score in the Champions League if he scores tomorrow night, beating his former teammate, Ansu Fati, who scored in the tournament aged 17 years and 40 days. Thus, Yamal has around one year to score and take this record from Fati.
Other Barcelona players
This will also be the first Champions League experience for the youngsters Fermin Lopez and Ander Astralaga, who have been named in the squad for the competition. Inaki Pena and Marc Casado have already made their debuts.
The game tomorrow might also see two Barcelona players compete on for the biggest European trophy after several years of break. Oriol Romeu, who actually won the trophy with Chelsea in 2012, last played in the tournament in December 2012. Similarly, Inigo Martinez last played in this tournament in November 2013, when he was still with Real Sociedad.
