Following almost a week of no footballing action, Barcelona finally return to the pitch against a new, eager opposition. Back in the Catalan capital from their tour to the United States of America, Barca face their final hurdle before the start of the official season just around the corner.
The Catalans would be facing off against English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur for this year’s edition of the annually contested Joan Gamper Trophy, famously named after club founder and former president Joan Gamper himself.
Having won two of their three outings during their pre-season tour, Barcelona come into this game with strong morale and a drive to prove that the team is hungry for much more this time around building up from their triumph in La Liga last season.
Despite a 5-3 loss to Arsenal in their very first pre-season game against a team that was well coached and already had high levels of match fitness due to having already partaken in other clashes for pre-season, Barcelona would turn their fortune around with a 3-0 win over El Clasico rivals Real Madrid and then a 1-0 win over Italian giants AC Milan.
Tottenham Hotspur on the other hand also come into this game with a similar record during their friendly outings. An initial 3-2 loss against fellow London club West Ham was then followed up by two convincing wins over Singapore club Lion City Sailors FC and Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, winning both games by a score of 5-1.
Before the official season kicks off for both sides, a clash between the Barcelona led by Xavi Hernandez and Spurs led by new manager Ange Postecoglou would be a beneficial encounter for both sides as they look to be prepared for the hurdles they are set to face once the official season kicks off.
