It is crucial for FC Barcelona to pay attention towards the needs and wants of its squad. While the Catalan club are quite restricted in terms of external spending, they can still work on building a strong team from within. To do that, however, Barcelona must constantly keep checks on their current players as well.
Many youngsters such as Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi have become household names within the Catalan club. This emergence of star power from La Masia comes at a great moment for Barça, given the fact that they need all the extra firepower they can get to compete against other juggernauts of the sport.
However, it is then equally important for the team to reward the performances and contributions of these players. Most recently, La Blaugrana have been hoping to renew the contract of a certain 21-year-old Spanish midfielder who led his country to Olympic gold during the summer.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are looking to renew the contract of Fermin Lopez until 2029. They recently held a meeting with the player’s representatives and the feeling from that summit is one of positivity and it looks like an agreement would not be hard to achieve.
Currently, the player has a contract valid until 2027 and a release clause worth €400 million. However, while Barcelona do actively want to increase the valuation of that release clause, the main priority for both parties is increasing the player’s salary and the bonuses included.
Given that his most recent season has been a breakout one, all thanks to the faith shown in him by Xavi Hernandez, it is not a surprise to see Barcelona value him as they currently are doing. Moreover, with more clubs now becoming attentive of Lopez’s rise to the top, Barça are trying their best to ward off that external interest.
