The upcoming summer transfer window should give FC Barcelona a chance to reevaluate their team. At the moment, the Catalan giants can hardly claim to have a squad that they are more than satisfied with. To ensure that the next season is up to their standards, Barcelona must make some difficult decisions first.
Such difficult decisions will naturally come in the form of potential player sales. Not every position is covered equally, and Barcelona thus need to readjust their resources and reinvest in positions where they need additional help. At the moment, there is already a certain position in which Barcelona feel themselves to be overbooked.
According to SPORT, the number of players that Barcelona have as center-backs makes them believe the position is overbooked. The likes of Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Marcos Alonso, and Inigo Martinez are all able to play as central defenders.
However, knowing that this position is overbooked, and others are under-booked, Barcelona have decided that sales must come from among these players. Yet, Barcelona will also reportedly be careful not to part ways with players who are considered strategically vital to the team’s future.
Both Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsi will be seen as untouchables when it comes to such players. In fact, renewals are already in process for both of those star defenders. The rest, however, could be on the transfer list despite their intentions to stay with the team.
A recent report claimed that Martinez may also end up staying, as Barcelona wish to keep him until 2025. Moreover, unlike Kounde and Christensen, his departure would not necessarily bring in a great deal of funds to help out the Catalan team.
Barcelona hopes to generate enough funds to facilitate other arrivals in the summer. The fullback position, a new pivot as well, and a new dynamic winger are all on the wish list of La Blaugrana. However, the planning will need to be quite precise to pull off signings that, for now, seem quite difficult.
