FC Barcelona are already planning for the winter transfer market amid the World Cup break. According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Xavi is set to meet with Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff to discuss the possibility of reinforcing certain positions in January and the players to target before traveling to Qatar as an ambassador of the FIFA World Cup.
Joan Laporta had already given a green light to reinforce the squad in January and it’s reported that Xavi will ask the club to sign a right-back and a defensive midfielder.
Sergi Roberto’s unavailability and Hector Bellerin’s subpar performances forced Xavi to opt for players like Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde as his makeshift right-backs and the manager wants to address this issue by signing a competent right-back. Arnau Martínez, Diogo Dalot, and Juan Foyth are the possible options to strengthen the right-back spot.
After some shaky performances from the club captain, Sergio Busquets, the club wants to sign a midfielder who can play both as a pivot and as an interior. The versatile German international, Ilkay Gundogan has emerged as the potential option to strengthen the midfield. The Catalan club could try to negotiate with Man City to sign the 32-year-old midfielder in January as he will be entering the last six months of his contract.
We can only wait to see what happens in January but it seems that Xavi has his eyes on a right-back and a midfielder.
