Strengthening the right-back position is one of the priorities for FC Barcelona in the upcoming transfer window. The club has lacked a competitive right back for a number of seasons now, despite the fact that fullbacks play an integral part in FC Barcelona’s traditional style of play.
SPORT reports that there are two prime targets that Barcelona are considering for this position. Firstly, Joao Cancelo has attracted the attention of the club for some time now, and his contract situation makes him ripe for a move to another club this summer. The Catalan club is currently considering bringing the Portuguese fullback on loan this summer.
FC Barcelona had made a loan proposal for the player in the winter window as well, but then the player ended up moving to Bayern Munich. This time, the Manchester City hierarchy is looking for a full sale, and the Barcelona higher-ups, with possible help from the player and his agent Jorge Mendes, will have to convince the Citizens for a loan deal.
Secondly, the club is also highly impressed by the performances of the Brazilian youngster, Vanderson de Oliveira Campos. Vanderson currently plays for Monaco and has already been called up for the Brazil senior team. The player has displayed great technical skills and strength in his club and international appearances and will be 22 years of age this month.
Barcelona tried to get the player in the last moments of the last summer transfer window. However, Monaco asked for €60 million for the player, which made the operation abortive.
Now, Barcelona will be looking to get the player in 2024, but the fact that the player is also generating interest from the Premier League, particularly from Manchester United, would make it complicated for Barcelona to convince the player to remain and wait for them at Monaco for a year.
With these two targets, the club aims to cover its right-back position, which is perhaps the only weak spot in the squad. Initially, Cancelo would be a world-class option on the flank, while Vanderson would come in the next year with lots of potential and hopefully be the long-term solution to this problem for the club.
