Although FC Barcelona will once again have to go into the upcoming summer transfer window with very limited room to maneuver, the club still needs to ensure the arrival of some players to assemble a competitive team for the 2024-25 season.
Quite clearly, one of the positions most in need of strengthening is the midfield pivot, and this is the area that the Catalans are looking to reinforce at all costs in the coming transfer window.
For this purpose, Deco wants a top player in this position to be acquired this summer, someone who can provide stability and balance in midfield. Andreas Christensen has played this part well in the last few weeks, but he is still naturally a central defender.
However, to get such a player, a lot of things need to go in the favour of the Catalans. Foremost, they need to return to the 1-1 rule, which would allow the club to invest everything generated from sales to be invested in new signings.
Furthermore, the club will also have to sell some of its high-value players, and according to a report from SPORT, one of the players identified by FC Barcelona higher-ups for a departure is the midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.
There is a lot of demand for the Dutchman in the market, as some Premier League sides and Paris Saint Germain have been reported to be interested in him. However, selling the midfielder will not be easy for the Catalans at all.
Frenkie has no intentions of leaving the Catalan club, and being aware of the footballer’s desires, Barcelona will have to convince him for a departure, especially as he also has a highly lucrative contract that goes till 2026.
Furthermore, if the Dutchman is sold this summer, the Blaugranes will also have to pay the arrears that they still owe him in deferred wages.
There are other players that Barcelona can sell if this operation turns out to be too complicated, however, Frenkie’s sale will allow the club to avoid an overbooking of midfielders, as the arrival of a starting pivot is essential.
