The Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has had an unforgettable last year. Only a few months ago, the young defender was preparing to tie down a place in the Juvenil A after a good season with Juvenil B. But twelve months later, he has already made himself one of the important players for Barcelona, while also having made his debut with the senior Spain side.

Before, Cubarsi, Josep Samitier was the youngest player to have won a medal at the Olympics with Spain, as he won the silver medal in 1920 at Antwerp. The former Spain star did this at the age of 18 years and 208 days. Cubarsi has now broken this record, as he won the Olympics gold at only 17 years of age.
Before Cubarsi made this record, the second youngest player to have won an Olympic medal with Spain was Pedri, who also won the silver medal in 2021 at Beijing, at the age of 18 years and 255 days.
Thus, Cubarsi has now become the youngest player to have won an Olympic medal with the Spain football team. However, he will still have to go a significant way before achieving what Samitier did with Barcelona and Spain.
When he won the Olympic medal in 1920, there was no World Cup, and this competition decided the best team in the sport. Furthermore, there was no age limit for competing in the competition, thus Samitier’s achievement was clearly more difficult.
He also had a successful career as a coach and technical secretary at Barcelona, and was integral in the arrival of some of the club’s legends like Kubala, Everisto, Eulogio Martinez, and Villaverde.
