In the leadup to the much-anticipated pre-season tour being held in the USA, Xavi continues to monitor all the players currently at his disposal for training. In just a few days, the entire Barcelona squad will be assembled, but for now, great scrutiny is being attached to the existing trainees.
One of the youngsters who has left a mark in his brief spell at Barcelona so far is Mikayil Faye. Signed as a developmental prospect, there are signs of great maturity being observed in his gameplay.
As per SPORT, Faye has already distinguished himself in training, and Xavi has frequently paired him with Araujo. The left-footed center-back is seemingly slotting well with Araujo, who once also arrived from abroad to climb his way up the ranks.
Due to the absence of Christensen and Inigo Martinez, Faye has taken advantage of the situation and is seen making an early impression in training sessions. Being paired with Araujo is a massive opportunity to learn, with the Uruguyan proving himself as one of the world’s best center-backs.
The African is recognized for his adept distributive skills as well as some strong physical attributes that enable him to be a robust defender, especially aerially.
Xavi’s talks with the player proved to be key in convincing the player to join the club amid interest from the likes of Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. Considering he had a few big suitors, Faye’s €1.5 million price tag has the potential of ending up as a bargain.
Appreciation from his coach also supports his case. Samir Toplak, his former coach, acknowledged that he is one of the two best players he has worked with. Josko Gvardiol, a man in high demand, is the other. Such high praise at a young age does induce excitement.
When the team departs for the United States on Wednesday to play friendly games against four elite European sides, a better understanding would be grasped on the defender’s attributes. But for now, a great deal is being expected.
