Nico Gonzalez has recently made his way back to his home club, FC Barcelona, following an average loan stint with Valencia. The turmoil that Valencia found itself in last season also had an impact on Nico’s ability to perform, while he also suffered a major injury which kept him sidelined for a number of weeks.
However, the La Masia graduate has now returned home and is partaking in the ongoing pre-season camp under the orders of Xavi. His future is yet to be sorted out as he has several offers on the table but wants to stay at Barcelona for the next season.
As reported by SPORT, Nico’s father, Fran Gonzalez, talked to a Portuguese radio station recently, where he gave some interesting comments about Nico’s future. The senior Gonzalez claimed that “Nico has offers from England, Portugal, and Spain. He is already of legal age, and he and his agent, Jorge Mendes, will decide. What is clear is that he must have playing time, although nothing has been decided yet.”
He also asked Barcelona to make clear their plans for Nico. In this regard, he commented that “He has three more years on his contract with Barça, and he has already started preseason. Barça will have to tell him what needs to be done, and they will talk. For the moment, he is training while waiting a bit for his future to be defined.”
Talking to a Portuguese radio station, Fran Gonzalez specifically thanked Porto for their interest in his son and said “It is clear that Porto is a great club, and it is appreciated that they are interested in Nico, but there is still nothing concrete about his future. In the coming days, discussions will take place.”
Recent reports about the player have all claimed that Xavi is not counting upon Nico for the upcoming season, and the best course for him remains another loan stint to a club where he will get ample playing time.
The Catalan club wants to send him on loan without a purchase clause, as they believe he has the potential to become a top-class midfielder if he continues to evolve in the current fashion.
