As the upcoming summer transfer window approaches, one of the areas that FC Barcelona aim to strengthen in this window is that of the midfield, as Barcelona are looking for a pivot to mitigate one of their key weaknesses.
In addition to this pivot, the Catalans are also keeping their eyes on an attacking midfielder, Xavi Simons, who trained at La Masia before joining Paris Saint Germain. He has been playing at RB Leipzig this season and has been highly impressive as he scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in 43 games.
This summer, he is set to return to Paris, but it is not yet clear whether he would want to stay at the Parc des Princes. In such a scenario, Barcelona are looking for potential ways to get him back, with a loan move being the most realistic option for the Catalans.
However, Barcelona are not the only side interested in the midfielder, and according to Mundo Deportivo, one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Bayern Munich, is also trying to get him in their squad for the next season. Their Sports Director, Max Eberl, is the biggest advocate for his signing, despite the operation possibly costing around €60-70 million.
However, the Bavarians will face two main difficulties while pursuing Simons this summer. Firstly, the Germans will have to get rid of some of their current offensive players before being able to sign the Dutchman.
Secondly, there is a lot of uncertainty about the head coach position at the club, as they have already announced the departure of Thomas Tuchel, but have not yet confirmed his replacement. Naturally, the midfielder would want to have an idea of whom he will be working with before committing to the Bavarians.
For his part, Simons is doing everything to be able to return to FC Barcelona this summer, and a clause in his contract also allows him to choose his next club in case PSG decide to send him on another loan.
