The last time FC Barcelona faced Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, it was in 2019 and the playing XI read: Ter Stegen, Roberto, Umtiti, Lenglet, Firpo, Busquets, Rakitic, De Jong, Dembele, Messi and Luis Suarez.

Fast forward five seasons and only two of those names are still at the club – Ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong. When Hansi Flick’s team takes a trip to Dortmund in December, the playing XI will look starkly different from what it was five seasons ago.

Both Dortmund and Barcelona have a similar record in the Champions League this season, with three wins and one loss from four games. They sit seventh and sixth respectively in the table, with the Catalan club having the better goal difference.

CentreGoals via X put out a post highlighting the teams that have scored the most goals in the Champions League so far this season. Barcelona are first, with 15 goals closely followed by BVB with 13 goals.

Borussia Dortmund’s official Twitter account has quoted this tweet by CentreGoals with a message to Barcelona. It reads: “See you in December! 🇪🇸🤝🇩🇪”

This is a classic case of how stats can often give you a very misleading story. Dortmund may have scored 13 goals but 7 of those came in one game against Celtic, 1 against Sturm Graz, 2 against Real Madrid, and 3 against Club Brugge.

On the other hand, Barcelona put 1 past AS Monaco (they were down to 10 men), 4 past Bayern Munich, 5 past Red Star Belgrade, and 5 past Young Boys. The two goalscoring records just cannot be compared, at the moment.

Dortmund would surely have meant this message in gest but at this point, Barcelona are the superior team. A case can be made for them being the best team in Europe and let’s wait and see how the clash in December plays out.
