Shirt numbers typically hold a special value within certain clubs, and Barcelona is no exception. The Catalan giants have honored various different numbers over the course of history that hold significance. Some numbers, however, hold more value to one individual than they would to others.

The number ‘10’, for instance, is arguably the most iconic number in football history. Many greats of the game have worn that number, perhaps most memorably at FC Barcelona itself. Yet, not every number can be handed out just that easily given the pressure it brings alongside it.

For new Brazilian arrival Vitor Roque, there may be a different number in store when he arrives at Barça. Currently injured and recovering with Athletico Paranaense, the 18-year-old is expected to possibly come to Spain in January. In a recent exclusive interview, Mundo Deportivo got to chance to personally speak with the player.

Talking about various topics, such as Barça players that first contacted him, Roque was also questioned about shirt numbers. After gifting the Brazilian talent a Barcelona first-team jersey, a heartfelt thank you came from the mouth of the 18-year-old.

The jersey in question had Roque’s name on the back, but the number was left blank. MD’s interviewer then jokingly asked if there was another number, perhaps 19, that may attract the forward:

“Do you like number 19?”

To which the 18-year-old replied positively and enthusiastically:

“Yes, yes! Number 19, yes… thank you very much.”

The number 9 is understandably the true goal of any striker. While Vitor Roque would undoubtedly want the fabled number on his back one day, 19 may be the choice for now. Not to forget, the immortalized number 10 is also still vacant, but it’s unlikely that Barça award it to a young newcomer already.

Roque hopes to join the long, proud lineage of Brazilians in FC Barcelona. Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Neymar Jr are just a few of the South American greats that have previously graced the Barça grounds. The 18-year-old hopes to be the next, and in terms of talent, there is no reason why he should not.
