FC Barcelona made a concrete effort to sign a new defender in the last few days of the transfer window. Injuries to Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen left the club extremely short of options in central defense.
FC Barcelona submitted a €20m offer to Bayern Leverkusen in the dying days of the transfer window in a bid to convince them to sell the German defender Jonathan Tah. The defending Bundesliga champions however did not budge in their stance.
Despite the player’s contract expiring next summer and him showing no signs of renewing the deal, as per Mundo Deportivo, Xabi Alonso still continues to rely on Tah, retaining his status as a guaranteed starter.
Generally, when a player refuses to sign a new contract, he is often sidelined with not much first-team action. However, Alonso has been treating the 28-year-old differently, maybe in the hope that he would change his mind.
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has revealed that the club has no agreement with Tah, putting Barcelona in the drivers seat, Here is what he had to say:
“We have no agreement with Tah for 2025. He is a German international, he has an important role at Bayer. That’s all. I am very happy with Kim and Upamecano”
The €30m-rated Bayer defender will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with any club come January and Barcelona will be waiting. The club has shown a penchant for signing top-class free agents in recent seasons.
Buoyed by the great start the club has made to the Hansi Flick era, Jonathan Tah might also consider reuniting with his former national team boss should the opportunity arise. After all, who doesn’t want to play for Barcelona?
The next few months could be career-defining for Jonathan Tah. With him having already played five games for his club this season, he looks set to be an important part of the furniture. Only time will tell if Barcelona manage to wrap up a deal for him in the coming months.
