Busquets names Manchester City player as his favorite to replace him at Barcelona

Sergio Busquets’ time at FC Barcelona is up, as he has already played his last match for the club. Owing to his stellar career with the Catalans, he has been in the spotlight in the last few days and has made a number of media appearances.

In these media appearances, the veteran midfielder has touched upon a number of topics. One such topic has been related to the player who would potentially replace him in the FC Barcelona squad after his departure. Busquets has made clear his preferences about the players he wants to see replace him.

SPORT reports that Busquets has been clear that his favorite player to replace him in the squad would be Rodri, who currently plays at Manchester City. The captain conceded that such a move would be very difficult, but believed Rodri has a very high level and has improved significantly in the last few seasons, especially under Pep Guardiola.

He also made his feelings clear about the rest of the players the club is currently considering. For instance, he believed Martin Zubimendi to be the player that most closely fits the profile required by the club.

Kimmich is another option the club has been considering for the last few weeks, and Busquets believed he represents a more German style of play with more transitions and a more box-to-box movement.

The departing captain also mentioned Nico and believed the youngster could be an important part of the squad if he gains enough experience and gets the opportunities to grow at the club.

He also warned the club not to look for a like-to-like replacement for himself, as no two players are similar, and the club should try to adapt to the strengths of whoever replaces him in the squad for the next season.

About his own future, Busquets disclosed that he would like to play for a few more seasons and then try himself in a coaching position. Busquets has been a unicorn at Barcelona, and the club cannot practically replace him in the squad as there is no one else with his unique skillset present in the world of football.

Thus, as Busquets himself said, the club would have to change its structure and midfield scheme a bit to adapt to the changed reality and ensure they do not miss the veteran Spaniard too much going forward.
