Although it has been more than a month since the summer transfer window closed, FC Barcelona were able to incorporate another player into their squad some days ago as they signed the Polish goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny.
The veteran goalie had already retired at the end of the last season, but came back from retirement to play for Barcelona as the starting Blaugrana goalkeeper, Marc Andre Ter Stegen, suffered a serious injury which is expected to keep him out of action for the rest of the season.
After joining the Catalan club, the Pole was also honored by his Polish national team ahead of the UEFA Nations League game between Poland and Portugal. Szczesny was a key part of the Polish national team squad for several years, before he hung up his gloves after the UEFA EURO 2024.
In the warm-up before this game, the Polish players donned shirts with pictures of Szczesny and Grzegorz Krychowiak, the former Sevilla and PSG player who has also bid his farewell to the national team.
But, as SPORT has reported, a more memorable event took place behind the scenes, in the dressing room tunnel, where Szczesny met the Portuguese legend, Cristiano Ronaldo. Cameras caught the interaction between these two players, and the footage of this meeting is spreading rapidly on social media.
After greeting one another, Szczesny tells Ronaldo that he has signed for Barcelona. After greeting the Pole’s children and signing autographs for them, Cristiano asks the Pole if he is happy at the Blaugrana club, to which he replies in the affirmative.
Then the former Real Madrid forward comments, “You’ve had to retire to go to a big club”, in a joking way.
While this might have been a light-hearted moment between two former teammates, this might not go down too well with the fans of Juventus, where the two players played together, or Arsenal, another big European club where Szczesny played during his career.
