It has been more than a year since Deco became the Sporting Director at FC Barcelona. The Portuguese official has not had an easy year in office and has already faced heavy criticism for his failure to bring some of the targets that were quite closely linked with the Catalan club.
His predecessor, Mateu Alemany, left setting very high standards for this position, and Deco’s failure to land players like Arda Guler, Lucas Bergvall, and Nico Williams, etc., has led to a general dissatisfaction among Barcelona fans about their Sporting Director.
Recently, there was news of Deco airing his grievances in a private conversation. Now, as SPORT has reported, the Portuguese official participated in the ‘Thinking Football’ conferences in Porto, and once again made some interesting remarks about his position.
The Barcelona Sporting Director himself revealed the name that Joan Laporta had set as his main objective even before the appointment of Mateu Alemany. This individual was Luis Campos, the current Sporting Director at PSG, who had even met with Laporta to explore his appointment at Barcelona.
However, negotiations between the two parties did not come to a fruitful end, and Alemany was appointed and given full powers in the economic and sporting areas.
Deco then went on to talk about his current job and said that he was already working on the next season after the exhausting last summer transfer window. For the upcoming months, the Catalans are looking to tie up some of their important players with new contracts, including the likes of Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Inigo Martinez, and Gerard Martin.
But as things stand, Deco will have his work cut out for the coming year as Barcelona are looking to make some high-profile additions to their squad next year, especially as the next summer transfer window will be the last one before the next elections at the Catalan club.
