Having gotten their hands free from the complexities of the transfer market, officials at FC Barcelona are now seemingly giving their full attention to the players they currently have with them.
The club has been working on renewals of several members of the squad, and in important developments, the club has already announced the renewals of Alejandro Balde and Xavi while also having already agreed with Lamine Yamal for a new contract.
First contacts for De Jong’s renewal
Another player that the club is looking to give another contract is the midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman has been playing an important role in Xavi’s team this season, and his performances have been key for the club to get a good string of results in the early phases of the season.
The latest report in this regard has been provided by Mundo Deportivo, which claims that the first contact between the two parties has already taken place as Deco and Frenkie de Jong communicated directly with each other for this purpose.
De Jong’s current contract runs till 2026, but the club still wants to show their intent to keep him for years beyond this current contract. Deco has already offered the full support of the club to the player after he got injured and is likely to be out till the October Classico.
De Jong wants to stay
Both Deco and Xavi currently have full confidence in De Jong’s abilities to contribute to Barcelona’s success in the coming years. However, a problem can arise in these negotiations, as De Jong’s entourage still remembers the time when the club tried to push the midfielder to join Manchester United for around €100 million.
However, De Jong himself is willing to remain in Barcelona, as he and his family are well-settled in the city. The club wants to renew him till 2028, and this new contract will expire when he will already be 31 years old. Now, Deco will arrange another meeting with De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, and will also shortly announce the renewal of youngster Lamine Yamal in the coming days.
