Dutch club continues to showcase interest in Barcelona fullback – report

The right-back position at FC Barcelona has been a problematic area since the departure of Dani Alves from the club. The club has been unable to get a competent enough right-back ever since the Brazilian’s departure, despite signing some players for this position.

One of the players that the club signed for this position but who has been unable to perform to the required standards of the club is Sergino Dest. Barcelona paid €21 million for his transfer from Ajax, but the player has struggled to remain relevant at the club, resulting in him being sent on loan to AC Milan during the last season.

Another loan for Dest

Dest returned to FC Barcelona during the summer but was unable to convince Xavi to give him a place in his lineup. The club wanted to sell the fullback this summer, but as no suitable offers came in, the Catalans now want to send him on another loan this summer.

Previously, it was reported here that PSV Eindhoven and OGC Nice are the two clubs where Dest can spend the next season, and the player has time till Monday to make a decision in this regard. Now, the journalist Gerard Romero claims that PSV are particularly pressing for the USA fullback. He further claims that Barcelona will have to pay 40% of Dest’s salary if he moves to the Netherlands this summer.

Right-back position at Barcelona

Meanwhile, Barcelona are reported to be getting closer to a loan agreement with Manchester City for the right-back Joao Cancelo. His arrival will solve the right-back problem for Xavi, but he cannot play the full season and would need forced or unforced breaks during the hectic season ahead.

With Dest going out on loan to PSV or Nice, Sergi Roberto will be the substitute for the Portuguese. Furthermore, Ronald Araujo can also play in this position at times after returning from his current injury, as Jules Kounde also can. Thus, with Cancelo’s signing, the right-back position would be adequately covered, even if Dest leaves on loan.
