Although FC Barcelona strengthened their ranks during the last summer transfer window, it is clear that the team is still quite thin, and more reinforcements are needed if the Catalan club aspires to compete for all the possible trophies.
For this purpose, the club is keeping an eye on some players, and one of these players is the Feyenoord Rotterdam midfielder Mats Wieffer. The Dutchman is closely being monitored by Barcelona, and as SPORT has noted, he himself is aware of the Catalan club’s interest in him.
Answering a question before his team’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, the midfielder spoke about Barcelona’s interest:
“I heard and read about the interest in me, but the truth is I don’t know much about it. There’s little more I can say.”
The midfielder was further asked whether he has talked to Frenkie de Jong, with whom he shares the locker room with the Dutch national side, and often plays alongside him in the midfield, about Barcelona interest, to which he replied:
“I didn’t talk to Frenkie about that, he wasn’t with us those days in the national team, and I didn’t send him any text messages, no.”
Wieffer recently became prominent with a goal that he scored with the Dutch national team against Gibraltar. FC Barcelona are closely monitoring his growth, and are considering him as an option for the present as well as the future.
For now, the midfielder and Barcelona are both remaining cautious about a possible move. However, if Wieffer keeps on developing and showing good signs in the coming months, the Catalan club may well make a move for him before other clubs start becoming interested in him as well.
