After playing only 26 minutes in the opening match of the season against Valencia, Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen suffered from Achilles tendonitis in his left foot, which has prevented him from stepping onto the pitch since.

Detailed tests on the heel showed this injury was related to the tendonitis in the same area that he has been suffering from for some time, but the club had not given any timeframe for his recovery. Still, it was expected that he would return to action in a few months.

Several months have passed since that time, but, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, the club still does not want to speculate on his return, and is not giving any idea of when he can possibly return to the pitch.

Initially, he was expected to return after the current international break, but the Catalans will provide an update on his condition only when they are fully convinced that he is able to play.

One reason for this lack of any update on his condition could be the fact that Barcelona have used his salary cap to register other players till January.

The €30m-rated Danish center-back has missed ten games with this injury up to now, including matches against Athletic Club, Rayo Vallecano, Real Valladolid, Girona, Villarreal, Monaco, Getafe, Osasuna, Young Boys, and Alaves.

As things stand, he is still a doubt for the upcoming game against Sevilla after the end of this international break. Flick recently highlighted that Christensen is a very important defender, but in the same statement made it clear that he will return to the pitch only when he is 100% fit.

With the absence of another highly important Barcelona defender, Ronald Araujo, Christensen’s availability could have been very beneficial for Hansi Flick at the start of the season. However, in his absence, Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi have been playing at a very high level, and have left very little to complain about with their performances.
