FC Barcelona have a great need for financial support at this point in time. The Catalan giants are no economic juggernaut in the market at the moment, and it shows in their recent transfer strategies. Despite that, the prestige and pedigree of the Barcelona badge has kept them alive somehow.
However, heading into the summer transfer window, there are a great deal of opportunities waiting to be grabbed. Most of these, for Barcelona, revolve around the club potentially generating some sizeable revenue from the sale of current players, and even from the sale of players who remain linked to Barcelona despite not being Barça players right now.
This includes several players who are either currently on loan or simply have a sell-on clause attached by Barcelona to their contracts when they were previously sold. As brought forward by Mundo Deportivo, there are at least eight names that the Catalan club can profit from this summer or beyond.
Chadi Riad (aged 20):
Currently a player for Real Betis, there is strong interest in him from English side Crystal Palace. However, Barcelona maintain the rights over 50% of all things involving the player’s future.
Thus if reports are to be believed that the English side is willing to pay €15 million for the player, around €9 million of that will be directly pocketed by Barcelona.
Riqui Puig (aged 24):
Formerly a promising player from La Masia, Riqui Puig had to ultimately leave Barcelona as he needed more prominence. He currently plays for MLS side LA Galaxy and Barcelona still retains a 50% sell-on clause for him.
However, his contract with the American team runs until 2027, so there could be some wait before Barcelona are to end up benefitting from that clause.
Oscar Mingueza (aged 25):
A Spanish defender who currently plays for Celta Vigo, Oscar Mingueza was a former Barcelona player who is now contracted to his new team in Vigo until 2026. However, Barça have a right on 50% of whatever Celta earns for selling the defender going forward.
Carles Alena (aged 26):
Transferred by Barcelona to Getafe in 2021, the Catalan club still maintains a 50% sell-on clause for the Spanish midfielder as well as an option for repurchase. So far, however, it has not seemed like leaving Getafe is on the cards just yet for him.
Junior Firpo (aged 27):
The defender, hailing from the Dominican Republic, currently plays for Leeds United over in England. Transferred by Barcelona back in 2021, La Blaugrana have since maintained a 20% sell-on clause on the player’s contract should he be sold by Leeds at any point.
Mika Marmol (aged 22):
Now contracted to UD Las Palmas until 2026, the young Spaniard was previously a product of FC Barcelona. However, the Catalan club still expected him to become a solid transferable property in the future so they have maintained their 50% rights of any potential future sale for the 22-year-old defender.
Jean-Claire Todibo (aged 24):
Having permanently signed for French club OGC Nice in 2021, the former Barcelona defender has a contract with the Ligue 1 side until 2027. However, Barcelona have an undisclosed clause of a percentage on a potential future sale, but MD reports it would be around 50%.
Philippe Coutinho (aged 31):
The Brazilian talent, formerly a player for Barcelona and Liverpool, is contracted to English side Aston Villa until 2026. Despite currently being on loan in Qatar, the player’s contract includes a clause that would give the Catalans access to 50% of any capital gain that Aston Villa earns on the sale of the 31-year-old.
