It is not only the FC Barcelona first team that has had a successful season domestically, as the youth team has also been performing well in the third tier of Spanish football. Barcelona Atletic’s performances this year have resulted in them securing a place in the promotion play-offs for La Liga 2.
Led by Rafa Marquez, the B team has been highly impressive this season. The team has won 16 of their matches in the league, drawing 13 and losing 9, playing in Group 2 of the Primera Federacion. These results have allowed the team to get 61 points, which have been enough to secure them a place in the play-offs for La Liga 2.
However, a big challenge awaits them before they can actually secure promotion. Their semi-final play-off tie comes against the youth team of historical rivals of Barcelona, i.e. Real Madrid’s Castilla. The Real Madrid subsidiary came third in the Group 1 of the Primera Federacion, having won 19 matches, drawn 12, and lost 7 matches.
The tie will be composed of two legs, with the first leg being played on 3rd June at the Johann Cruyff Stadium, while the second leg will be played at the Valdebebas on 10th June.
Getting to La Liga 2 will be a big step forward for Barcelona Atletic, as it will mean the team gets into a significantly more competitive league for the next season. This will provide more opportunities for their players to play high-pressure matches and prepare better for the cut-throat environment of senior-level football.
However, they still have to overcome some barriers to achieve this, and one such challenge is overcoming the Real Madrid Castilla side led by Raul. The Capital side has also been flying high in the Primera Federacion and is one of the favorites for promotion to La Liga 2.
