Owing to the financial problems being faced by FC Barcelona, the Catalans have been finding it highly difficult to compete with the biggest clubs in Europe for their desired players in the market.
Only in the last few hours, reports indicate that Barcelona have missed out on one of their targets that was closely linked with the club, i.e., Lucas Bergvall. As already reported here, Bergvall has decided to join the Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs instead of Barcelona for the next season.
The 17-year-old Swede was quite close to Barcelona, and this turn of affairs will be a significant blow for the Catalan club. SPORT has identified several reasons why the youngster decided to join Tottenham instead of Barcelona.
Firstly, Tottenham offered Bergvall a more attractive sporting deal, as they promised him a first-team contract. Barcelona, on the other hand, were only considering him to be a potential first-team player, as they believed offering him a first-team contract would be unfair to other youngsters already at the club who had already trained under Xavi.
Secondly, finances were also a point of problem for the Catalans, as the economically strained Barcelona cannot compete with one of the biggest Premier League clubs. Thus, Tottenham offered better terms to both Djurgardens and Bergvall. Furthermore, Spurs also offered higher commissions to the involved agents to ensure his transfer.
Thirdly, the uncertainty in the Barcelona dressing room also played against the Catalan club’s interests. The only thing that Bergvall knew about the next Blaugrana coach was that it would not be Xavi, and the Swede opted for the more settled Tottenham.
Fourth, Bergvall’s family also had a role in him selecting Tottenham over Barcelona. His family members believed the youngster would find it easier to adapt in England, especially as he is well versed in English.
Lastly, the allure of the Premier League also worked to convince the midfielder to join the English side, and he was also impressed by the Tottenham stadium when he visited it in the last week.
