After ending the previous year without any silverware, FC Barcelona have begun the 2024-25 season in impressive fashion. The Catalans have already built a 9-point lead at the top of La Liga and are on track to qualify directly for the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
However, it’s not just their position in these two competitions that highlights Barcelona as a contender for the top titles this season. The team has been performing at an exceptionally high level, securing convincing victories against some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
In such a scenario, the appeal of playing for the Blaugrana team is once again increasing among some of the top players in Europe, and one such player who wants to return to Barcelona after leaving some years ago is Alejandro Grimaldo, according to a report from Fichajes.
The current Bayer Leverkusen player had left the Catalan club for Benfica after impressing in Barcelona Atlètic, where he was also the captain. He never made his debut for the FC Barcelona first team, and his decision to join Benfica ultimately proved to be a good one for him as he developed a lot at the Portuguese club.
He then went on to join Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and had a very good last season with the Germans as he won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal, and lost the Europa League title only in the final against Atalanta.
Now, as is the case with some of his teammates like Jonathan Tah, he is looking to join another big European club. But despite his wishes, his next destination is unlikely to be FC Barcelona as the Catalans already have Alejandro Balde as their fixed starter, and they are not looking for another player who might clash with the Spaniard’s development.
