Throughout its existence of more than 124 years, FC Barcelona has experienced highs and lows of almost every kind, but has grown to become one of the most beloved of football clubs throughout the world.
During these years, Barcelona had some of the best players in the world playing in its ranks, including the likes of Maradona, Cruyff, Ronaldinho, and Messi.
The club also had a fair share of players who have seen their careers to be mired in controversy, including the infamous Luis Figo, Diego Maradona, Olegeur Presas, and Ricardo Zamora. However, another former, but mostly less-known, Barcelona player may have left all of them behind with his latest controversy.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Edgar Ie, the centre back who spent three years in the Barcelona reserve team and also made his senior team debut under Luis Enrique, is undergoing investigations after indications emerged that his twin brother, Edelino, might have played five games in his stead for Dinamo Bucharest.
The defender joined the Romanian team last February as a free agent, after having played in Spain, France, The Netherlands, and Turkey. Thus, one can easily infer that Ie would have been able to speak several of these languages to some extent.
However, it was realized by Dinamo Bucharest that the player who is playing for them speaks only Portuguese, leading to suspicions of impersonation.
Following this realization, Dinamo asked the player for his driving license, to get him a car from one of the club’s sponsors. However, the player refused to hand over his license, leading to further strengthening of these suspicions.
To make things even more compelling, the player playing for Dinamo does not show any signs of a scar on his right knee, while it is known that Ie had undergone a surgery to fix a torn cruciate ligament back in 2022.
For his part, Edelino had himself been a footballer, who played as a winger and trained at the youth level at Sporting CP, but his footballing career was rather insignificant as his last contract with the Polish side Tluchovia was terminated back in January.
While it remains to be seen what penalty the footballer might face if the impersonation is proven, Dinamo Bucharest themselves face the risk of losing eight points they had won with Edelino playing as Ie.
