Owing to the team’s poor form, Xavi Hernandez is facing a lot of uncertainty over his future at FC Barcelona. The Barcelona head coach has been facing questions about the possibility of the Catalans deciding to part ways with him, despite the repeated assurances from the club authorities that they still have full confidence in Xavi.

Xavi himself has been clear that to survive at a club as big as Barcelona, he, or anyone else, will have to win trophies, and not winning trophies will naturally lead to an exit from the club.

As things stand, Barcelona are alive in Copa del Rey, La Liga, and the Champions League, and only recently, Xavi expressed his belief that his team was closer to winning one of these trophies than it had been since his arrival.

However, the head coach has still faced a lot of criticism, and a former Barcelona player, Julio Alberto Moreno, believes that this criticism will do the club more bad than good. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the former defender commented:

“Questioning Xavi every game, every week, every day is not positive. It’s like having the sword of Damocles hanging over our heads. We need to have more calmness, let him work, as he did last year when he won the league.”

Moreno put his full support behind Xavi in this testing time, and believed: “There is no one better than Xavi to lead the team; we have to let him work.”

The ex-defender expressed a desire for players and managers at Barcelona to have greater stability at the club:

“If we don’t win against Betis on Sunday, all hell breaks loose. And this can’t happen. Coaches and players must feel that if a game is lost, nothing should happen. There can’t be so much uncertainty; what the club needs is confidence and calm. As Xavi says, Barcelona is the most challenging club in the world.”

There is definitely some merit in the ex-Barcelona player’s comments, as without a certain tenure, no manager can properly implement his ideas and philosophy on the team.

However, as Barcelona are always in competition for the big titles, getting wins on the pitch is also very important, and the club has to tread a fine line in between these two outcomes.
