Significant administrative changes have taken place at FC Barcelona in the last few months, but the one departure that is going to have the greatest impact on the Catalan club is that of Mateu Alemany.

Alemany served as the club’s Sporting Director from March 2021 to September 2023 and was one of the most powerful voices at the club during this time.

The former Sporting Director has been hailed for skilfully guiding Barcelona through a period of great turmoil. He was able to strengthen the team despite the serious financial problems being faced and thus contributed to making the club a more sustainable entity.

However, Barcelona and Alemany parted ways earlier this year, and he has yet to take up a new job. He was in negotiations with Atletico Madrid to become a member of their board, but these negotiations ended without an agreement, as Atletico did not want to get rid of Andrea Berta, who is currently in charge of the club’s sporting department.

Now, according to SPORT, Alemany has set his sights on another high-profile role, as he is seemingly testing the waters for running for the presidency of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). For this purpose, Alemany has already undertaken contacts with several presidents of territorial federations.

Since the resignation of Luis Rubiales after the incident involving Jenni Hermoso, the administration of the RFEF has been headed by Pedro Rocha’s management board. Rocha is one of the strongest candidates to become the next president of RFEF as well, and is the favorite to replace Luis Rubiales.

The elections for the presidency are scheduled to be held in the first quarter of 2024, but the exact date is yet to be determined. Whenever these elections take place, Barcelona may get to see a familiar face on one of the top positions in Spanish football if Alemany runs for and wins the presidency.
