It is not always a wise decision to leave FC Barcelona for just about anything. However, it is also true that the Catalan club already possesses a great variety of talented players and not everyone gets equal opportunities. For this reason, Barcelona does sometimes see talented players move away.
Such a scenario can be attached to the departure of Marc Guiu, a talented 18-year-old striker from Barça Atletic who is no longer at the Catalan club. Despite making a name for himself almost immediately after featuring for the first team, the player’s destiny is no longer connected to Barça.
Either for monetary reasons or in the search for more sporting opportunities, Guiu decided to join English Premier League side Chelsea. However, while his hopes may have been focused on potentially playing in the Premier League, his reality is not too promising.
The London-based club paid €6 million to sign the player from Barcelona and it worked out fine for all parties at first. However, with each passing week, it becomes clear that Guiu has not exactly made the leap to another elite-level club as he may have thought initially.
According to SPORT, Chelsea has already started to consider the possibility of sending the youngster out on loan immediately. To ensure that he has minutes next season, the Barcelona product will likely be sent back to Spain to a very familiar club.
Previously, it was reported that Sevilla may be the destination that Guiu ends up at for his loan season. However, due to recent developments, FC Barcelona rivals Espanyol are now reportedly in pole position to sign the former La Masia talent and make him their striker for a season.
Martin Braithwaite, formerly a striker for Barcelona himself, is expected to leave Espanyol this summer. His departure now paves the way for Guiu to come in and be guaranteed a lot more minutes than he may have got at Barcelona or at Chelsea.
Unfortunately, Espanyol and Barça have a very strained relationship. Belonging to the same city, they share an intense rivalry that has often dissolved into very petty and aggressive arguments between not just the players but also the fans.
For Guiu to return to this club, one that will play in La Liga in the upcoming season, a reunion with FC Barcelona could get ugly. Given how intensely the fans seem to despise each other and their respective clubs, it would not be a positive sight for Barça fans to see one of their own dressed up in the colors of Espanyol.
