After Sergio Busquets’ exit from FC Barcelona at the end of the last season, the Catalan club opted for Oriol Romeu to replace the former captain in the squad. The former La Masia graduate had a good start to the season but has faded significantly in the last few matches.
With him becoming less reliable for Xavi, Romeu is becoming less relevant for Barcelona, and the rumors of his possible departure from the Catalan club at the end of the season are gathering pace.
However, Romeu is still valued highly by his former club, Girona, and this fact was made apparent by the comments of their Sporting Director, Quique Carcel, in a recent event, which have been reported by Mundo Deportivo:
“If the option arises for Oriol Romeu to leave Barcelona, we would like to bring him back. He would be important here. Neither the club nor the player has informed us that he might leave, but if he does, we would want to have him.”
Carcel also spoke about another player who has recently been strongly linked with Barcelona and who is shining in his first season in La Liga, Savinho:
“Having someone like Deco express interest in one of your players is beautiful and fills you with pride. It happened to us last season with Oriol Romeu, but our goal is to retain these players because completely changing the squad is challenging.”
Despite Carcel’s insistence on retaining the Brazilian in Girona’s squad for years to come, it is clear that the youngster will have a lot of suitors in the upcoming transfer windows due to his performances this season.
A big club will possibly pry away the winger, and Barcelona will have to keep on working on this operation to ensure that they are not left behind in the race to sign him by financially stronger rivals.
