One of the most exciting players signed by FC Barcelona in this summer transfer window is the German midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan. The German international has been operating at a top level for the last few years, and is one of the biggest names in world football currently.
Gundogan was the captain of the Manchester City squad that won the treble last season, and his performances in the latter part of the season particularly helped Manchester City achieve this historic feat. The last season was also his best in terms of goals scored as he played in more advanced positions than usual.
These performances last season have been thoroughly recognized by the footballing world since the season ended, but this recognition has still not ended. This is shown to be the case from a report by SPORT, which states that the German has been selected as the “Footballer of the Year” by the German publication, Kicker.
Journalists from throughout Germany participated in voting for this award, and Gundogan came clear winner, leaving other candidates like Niclas Fullkrug and Kolo Muani miles behind. The new Barcelona player got 198 points, while Werder Bremen’s Niclas Fullkrug got 88, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kolo Muani got 69.
The best manager chosen by Kicker was Urs Fischer, who led FC Union to a Champions League berth for the first time in their history.
However, Gundogan was the most prominent player recognized in this process, and the performances which led him to win this award were also the reason why Manchester City were so keen to renew him before he joined Barcelona.
The German will hopefully be playing in the Joan Gamper trophy on Tuesday, after having suffered a knock in the friendly against Real Madrid in Dallas, USA. However, Gundogan will make only a brief cameo in this match, as Xavi will be looking ahead to bring him to full fitness before the 2023-24 season starts.
