Barcelona enter January with an eye out for possible recruitments that can be made in the first month of 2024. Despite their well-documented financial limitations, the club remains as driven as ever to compete. However, negotiations and transfer dealings will hardly be an easy task for Barcelona.
Reportedly, one of the primary goals for Barça in the winter market was to scout a midfielder. Given Gavi’s unfortunate ACL injury, the Catalans are in need of a dynamic face in the midfield. Moreover, they could also do well with a new pivot, given how badly they lack specialists at the moment.
Thus, Barcelona circled the name of Aleix Garcia. Currently the captain of La Liga rivals Girona, the 26-year-old has been key for his team this season. However, as per several reports, Barcelona would be looking to make an advance for him in January.
On the other hand, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Girona’s coach is optimistic about retaining his captain. Michel, current head coach for the red and white Catalans, believes that Garcia will not leave at this point:
“I get the feeling that Aleix is not going to leave, but it would hurt me regardless of which team he goes to because we would lose him. We are not at the level of Barça.”
However, he did state that his goal is to continue developing this Girona side. While he acknowledges that the player’s potential departure would greatly damage his side, he remains optimistic:
“We want to continue growing as a club and to do so we need players of Aleix’s level. It would hurt me because we lose potential, but I have the feeling that he will continue.”
Girona and Barcelona continue to take on each other as they look towards La Liga glory. However, when it comes to Garcia, there is more than just ideological differences about his preference. As it stands, both the Catalan sides disagree even on the value of his active release clause.
