The La Liga season is coming to a close, but FC Barcelona are not done with their objectives yet. While all hopes of silverware are already lost, La Blaugrana must at least ensure other objectives. Prior to the game against Girona, the battle for second place was all Barcelona could strive for this season.

However, following a 4-2 defeat to their Catalan neighbors over in the Montilivi, Barcelona were left utterly broken. Girona had overtaken them in the league, and Barça now needed their opponents to drop points to some other team at some point to even mathematically have a chance of regaining their second position in the league.

Fortunately for Barcelona, as highlighted by SPORT, it seems that the lights of fortune have smiled upon the club for once. In the recent encounter between Alaves and Girona, a 2-2 draw was the result that ended up being conclusive, with a point earned by both teams courtesy of a late additional time equalizer from Alaves.

However, Barcelona must now make sure that they capitalize on this lapse from Girona. Facing a formidable Real Sociedad side, the Catalan giants must still ensure victory so that they can once again be in second place and overtake Girona, after which everything will be in Barça’s own hands.

With four games left to go, a victory against Real Sociedad at the Montjuic Stadium could go a long way in terms of giving Xavi’s side the momentum they need to finish the rather disappointing campaign on a stronger note. Moreover, with Barcelona aiming for much greater things next season, a finish within the top two places in the league is a necessity.

Not only would it give additional funds to the club, which would be a big boost for them at the moment, but it would also grant them access to participating in next season’s Spanish Super Cup. However, before they can begin to dream about next season, Barcelona must first take this one step at a time and overcome Sociedad’s sizeable threat.
