FC Barcelona are looking to be a competitive team that can take on challenges on all fronts. So far this season, they have shown that they possess the quality to do this, even if they have been inconsistent in La Liga. Across the board, however, Barcelona continue to dream big this season.

Despite the lack of financial resources and backing that Hansi Flick got in the summer, he has managed to transform this team into an extremely dangerous side. Still, even in the current Barcelona squad, there are players who have been far less involved than others this season.

One such player is Andreas Christensen, a Danish defender who has had a frustrating season so far. Having suffered a rather lengthy injury near the start of the season, the Dane’s absence was even used to temporarily register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor with La Liga.

However, now that he is finally back from that injury, there are doubts about whether or not Hansi Flick would even consider playing him. With Ronald Araujo having just signed a renewal and having regained prominence, as well as both Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi having showcased their splendid quality this season, it was already hard enough for Christensen to break into the starting eleven.

Moreover, with reports suggesting that Eric Garcia will now be staying at Barcelona after impressing both Flick and the club, Christensen could even become the last choice on the bench. For this reason, rumors about a potential exit have started to spiral.

Even Hansi Flick, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, refused to comment on the player’s future during the press conference ahead of the game between Barcelona and Valencia in La Liga:

“I talk to Andreas, who came back from a long injury, he’s back and training well. Some players are ahead of him, but we know his quality, and when he’s 100% fit, we’ll see what happens.”

Having admitted himself that there are players ahead of him, Flick’s answer was rather cryptic but also telling. Christensen will likely not get a lot of minutes this season unless some kind of injury crisis befalls the Barcelona defenders or due to some other unforeseen issue.

As of right now, the 28-year-old Danish defender’s prominence at Barça could reach an all-time low. It remains to be seen if he considers moving away from the club to regain prominence elsewhere, but it seems clear from Hansi Flick’s words that he is not exactly the top pick at Barcelona right now when it comes to centre-backs.
