This summer will likely lead to a lot of changes for FC Barcelona to manage. La Blaugrana have worked to regain some semblance of normality again, and they hope to use it to help in their own objectives. Beyond just having come to terms with financial Fairplay, Barcelona hope to have the ability to bring in quality signings.
However, despite an increased ability to make certain signings, Barça still remain restricted to an extent. That is why it would not be a good idea to simply part ways with each and every player irrespective of their role or position within the current squad.
Hansi Flick, the new head coach at Barcelona, seems to be willing to give everyone a chance for now. Whether it be the players arriving from loan spells, youth talents that have struggled in the past, or simply first-team players who have lost prominence, the German tactician is open to seeing them prove their worth.
That is why, at least for now, Hansi Flick wishes to retain a certain 32-year-old midfielder. According to Mundo Deportivo, the new Barcelona coach has given his clearance to see veteran Spaniard Oriol Romeu stay at the club for one more season.
The main reasoning behind why Flick is okay with Romeu continuing at Barça is based on two main factors. Firstly, the Barcelona coach wishes to have some physicality and strength in his midfield and Oriol Romeu provides just that. Apart from the former Girona man, no other current midfielder at Barça possesses even remotely similar traits.
Secondly, Romeu’s departure hardly puts even a dent on financial fair play. Thus, since his departure would not give Barcelona too much of an economic benefit, Flick believes it is better to simply retain the player and use him for the sporting benefits that he can possibly provide.
Currently working with the new coach in his preseason training sessions, Romeu is looking to earn his place again. Given the various midfield injuries that Barcelona is having to deal with, the 32-year-old Spanish midfielder may get to have plenty of chances during the preseason to convince Flick of his value to the team.
