It has been a season and a bit since Sergio Busquets left FC Barcelona for Inter Miami and it is safe to say that until the start of this campaign, the club was struggling in the pivot department. Well, that was until Hansi Flick came in.

The German coach arrived at Barcelona, went straight to La Masia, and picked out two Marcs who could play in that position – Bernal and Casado. The former started the season as first-choice before an unfortunate ACL injury ruled him out for the next 12 months.

Since then, no one would have imagined that Casado would step up in the manner that he has. In a short span of time since his promotion to the first team, the 21-year-old has become indispensable in midfield for Hansi Flick.

Alongside Pedri, the duo have formed a beautiful partnership that was on full display against Bayern last night. Casado is an incredible ball-winner and covers defensively for his partner who in turn takes up positions from where he can influence the attack directly.

Speaking about the former Barca Athletic captain’s performance against Bayern Munich, Hansi Flick could not hide his praises for the €15m-rated midfield gem. As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, here is what he had to say:

“It’s incredible. If you know that Casadó comes from Barça Atlètic and see the level he’s at now… he’s incredibly good defensively and with the ball at his feet.

“It’s La Masia, it’s La Masia. Everyone in the stadium sees the quality of these players. It was clear when we had confidence, in the second half, how we passed the ball around—it was incredible. Everyone was happy, including the staff.”

During his few months as the Barcelona head coach, Flick has shown immense trust in La Masia, giving many youngsters a chance. In the match against Bayern, the German coach fielded two 17-year-olds, four 21-year-olds, and one 25-year-old, six of whom came through La Masia.

Casado has demonstrated on many occasions this season that he is more than just a defensive player. His line-breaking ability is understated, and he also possesses a pinpoint long ball. His assist to Raphinha last night was reminiscent of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s style.

Barcelona are extremely fortunate and should be grateful that La Masia consistently provides solutions whenever there is an issue. Casado has become fundamental to the team, and one can only hope he continues to perform at the same level against Real Madrid this weekend.
