The history between FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi is that of a beautiful fairytale that was cut short by a brutal ending. Forced away from the club of his life, the relationship between both entities ever since has felt tainted and only a proper reunion looks to be the solution.

During this summer transfer window, there came about a real possibility that Lionel Messi could mark his return to Barcelona. However, due to ongoing complications with financial fair play and its consequent limitations, the Catalan giants were unable to get a deal done and the Argentine legend ended up moving to the United States of America.

Now with David Beckham’s Inter Miami, Messi has been sublime for his MLS-based team and has already captained them to heights they had not reached ever before. Despite that, an untimely injury prevented the Blaugrana legend from competing in recent matches for Inter Miami, and they are now set to miss the playoffs for their own domestic competition.

As a result, the Miami-based outfit will not be competing in any games until February of 2024 when their new campaign takes off. However, this opens up a new box of possibilities to potentially connect Barca and Messi once again.

According to various reports, MLS teams are allowed to loan out their players to European teams once their own season concludes in the scenario that the team in question is unable to qualify for playoffs. This brought to life the rumors linking Messi to Barcelona in a possible lean deal while Inter Miami is on a break.

However, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the topic was recently brought up in front of current Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino, who also happens to be a former Argentina and FC Barcelona manager.

Asked about the possibility of Messi going off to Barcelona now that the season has ended for Inter Miami, the Argentine manager made a joking comment on the prospect:

“It would be for a walk, I hadn’t heard anything about these rumors. I’m surprised. If you tell me he’s going on vacation or visiting Barcelona, it’s possible, the rest I don’t know.”

For now, the topic will likely remain relevant given the nature of any news related to Lionel Messi and Barcelona. However, it appears that thus far no contacts have been made for any such loan deal and it will have to be seen whether any updates begin to come out over the next few weeks leading up to January.
