With the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba from FC Barcelona at the end of the last season, Sergi Roberto has been given the responsibilities that come with the captain’s armband.

This would definitely have been a dream for the player who has joined the club as a cadet and has given eighteen of his years to Barcelona, the last fourteen as a member of the first team.

Roberto’s versatility and experience make him a useful piece for Xavi, but he is not an automatic starter. Still, he has been getting quality minutes this season, having played in six of the eleven games this season and also having scored a crucial goal against Granada.

Inter Miami want Roberto

However, having already reached thirty-one years of age, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Roberto’s time at Barcelona is coming to an end. There has been much speculation about his future and was particularly linked to a move away to Inter Miami when Messi, Busquets, and Alba all joined the MLS side.

Roberto did not leave the club in the summer and put these rumors of a move to America at rest in the summer, but according to SPORT, Inter Miami are still considering making an offer for the Barcelona captain to entice him to join his former teammates in Miami. However, Roberto is not considering such an offer currently.

Roberto wants to stay

Inter Miami made significant improvements to their squad with the aforementioned players. However, the Miami club was unable to qualify for the MLS playoffs, and thus is looking to strengthen their squad even further in the coming months.

However, they cannot offer him very high wages as MLS allows only three high-wage players, and Messi, Busquets, and Alba currently claim these spots.

Roberto, meanwhile, is very happy to be captaining the first team of his boyhood club for now but has still not completely closed the door for a move to the MLS in the future.

Currently recovering from an injury he suffered in training, he wants to stay at Barcelona for now but does not want to become a burden for the club. Barcelona would monitor his performances over the season, and then make a decision about renewing him.
