FC Barcelona have been in talks with Nike over a new contract for quite some time now. Many reports have already covered the negotiations in detail and a lot of information is already present on the deal in question. However, Barcelona has not yet finalized the deal despite negotiations looking like they were in an advanced stage.
An official message that would provide an update on the matter was thus being awaited. Given the financial issues that Barcelona has been going through over the last few seasons, it is understandable why this deal is considered to be such a big deal for the club and the interested fanbase.
Now, however, it would appear that Barcelona president Joan Laporta has finally given his own word that the deal is close to being wrapped up. In a recent interview, as highlighted by Barca Times, the club president provided a much-needed update on the Nike deal:
“With Nike, we will have the best contract in the football world. We could’ve signed it in August already at lower terms but I wanted to get the best contract possible for Barça. It’s coming soon and it will be a 10 year contract.”
Reportedly, this new sponsorship deal is indeed expected to be a massive one from a financial standpoint. It would also massively help Barcelona in overcoming their financial hurdles and in returning to the 1:1 rule that the club so desperately wishes to get to.
Consequently, that would allow the club to function much more smoothly and with a lot more freedom in the transfer market as well. For Joan Laporta and his board, turning the financial situation around at the club was always a massive objective, and they are now closer than ever to taking a great leap towards that goal.
While no exact date has been set for now, the details provided by Laporta look to be promising. Despite earlier reports suggesting a sort of falling out between Barcelona and the American sports brand, it now seems that both sides are closer than ever to reaching the final agreement on what could be a historic deal.
