In terms of consistency, FC Barcelona have been more or less not quite reliable. Certain games this season have showcased La Blaugrana play their most potent style of football. Other times, they have looked nothing like themselves at all as FC Barcelona.

Much of the reasoning behind that was attributed towards the major injuries that took place. With Gavi and Ter Stegen both currently injured, Barcelona were without the services of other key players previously as well.

The likes of Pedri, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Ronald Araujo were also all previously sidelined. However, arguably none of their absences were felt as badly as that of Frenkie De Jong. The Dutch midfielder helps Barcelona control games in ways no other player does, and is thus essential for Xavi’s style of play.

Following the latest win against FC Porto in the Champions League, Joao Cancelo made sure to highlight the Dutchman’s importance. Speaking to UEFA TV (h/t Martin Minan) after his man-of-the-match performance, Cancelo singled out De Jong’s importance:

“I want to say something about Frenkie de Jong. He’s one of the best players I have EVER seen in that position. When he plays he makes a tremendous difference and we’re happy to have him back.”

This statement alone goes to show just how crucial De Jong is to FC Barcelona. Despite past rumors and attempts to possibly offload him, it appears that Barça now truly realizes the value of their new captain.

Cancelo, on the other hand, was also immense for Barcelona. The official man of the match, he scored a brilliant goal to tie up the score for Barcelona and then went on to provide a great assist to Joao Felix in order to seal the victory for the Blaugranes.

However, his continuity is a completely different headache. On loan from Manchester City until the summer of 2024, Barcelona are aware that his continuity within Spain must be guaranteed. Hence, negotiations and talks are to follow, with the final outcome still anyone’s guess.
