The Spanish Super Cup and La Liga titles won by FC Barcelona in the last season were a testament to the Catalan club’s ability to win trophies even in their most difficult circumstances.
The Blaugranes have long been mired in financial difficulties, and their finances make it impossible for them to compete with other big European clubs for their desired targets in the market.
In such already complex circumstances, Barcelona received a further jolt yesterday as La Liga announced the squad cost limits for the first division clubs, and the Catalan club saw its limit reduce from €270 million to €204 million.
Now, Mundo Deportivo has identified the main reasons that caused this limit to drop for Barcelona. Since last September, the Blaugranes have been working with the €270 million in mind, and while maintaining their wage costs, have also generated more expenses than the income they brought in.
Although this is more of an accounting issue and is included in the books of the 2022-23 season, it still has an impact on the club’s spending limits for the upcoming season.
However, the arrival of Vitor Roque is not going to impact this number, as he was brought using Gavi’s injury, whose contract is suspended because of his long-term absence.
Furthermore, this is still not the final limit with which Barcelona will be going into the summer market, and a clearer picture will only be obtained in May when the club will send in its treasury plan to the league authorities.
But what is clear for now is that unless Barcelona can reduce their €200 million deficit, they will continue to be bound by the 50% rule, and not the normal 1:1. Thus, the Catalans will be able to use only 50% of the proceeds obtained from a player’s sale for registration of new players.
One operation that can significantly improve the club’s matters in this regard would be to obtain the outstanding amounts for the sale of Barca Studios. The Catalans still have to receive €40 million to catch up with La Liga’s calculation of the salary limit for Barcelona.
