On Tuesday, while a number of Barcelona personnel were focused on the transfer market, Lamine Yamal was collecting another award. The 19-year-old was voted as the best player in La Liga by his peers on the AFE (Spanish Football’s Association), taking the acclaim alongside Barcelona Femeni’s Patri Guijarro, who won the equivalent award for Liga F.
Lamine Yamal spoke to the media upon arrival at the awards ceremony in Madrid, and as per Diario AS, he started by expressing his pleasure at receiving another individual honour.
“I’m very happy to be here, anything that is an award is well received. More than one union of footballers who are the ones who know. There is a lot of talk about what happens to me, but I am very happy and happy.”
Lamine Yamal: Barcelona are not missing Alvarez
The teenager was asked about Barcelona’s failed bid to sign Julian Alvarez during the summer transfer window. He had previously expressed excitement at the prospect of having the Argentine striker as a teammate, although he does not see his absence as a blow to the current squad, who have been in prolific form at the start of the 2026-27 season.
“Right now we are very good and we are not lacking goals. Julián is a great player, but I’m happy with the squad we have.”
It hasn’t been an easy start to the new campaign for Lamine Yamal, who struggled in Barcelona’s opening two matches before a starring two-goal display against Rayo Vallecano on Monday. He was asked about whether he sees himself being able to keep improving in the coming years, while also reiterating his desire to help the Catalans win their first Champions League title since 2015.
“I would have a problem if I don’t improve anymore. I’m very young. Always listening and wanting to improve. I want to win the Champions League.”
