FC Barcelona have finally brought in a player to replace their former captain Sergio Busquets in the midfield pivot position. Having graduated from La Masia, the player made his second debut for the Catalan club in the last friendly against Arsenal.
Although this match against Arsenal ended in a defeat and Romeu’s debut itself rather discreet, the midfielder is full of confidence that he will adapt to the team in the coming days and significantly improve his performance.
In an interview with the club’s media, which has been reported by SPORT, the player provided insights into his style of play and declared:
“The physical aspect is important in my playing style. I enjoy dominating the central midfield area and, above all, feeling that opponents are intimidated and uncomfortable when passing through there.”
On one hand, I like to win back balls and quickly find offensive players, but also to distribute balls from the back, control possession, and attack in the opponent’s half… These are characteristics of Barça under Xavi, and that’s why I believe I can adapt very well and help the team.”
Romeu also commented on the goals that FC Barcelona have set for themselves in the coming season, and was full of confidence and optimism in this regard:
“With the squad, we have, the team we are building, and the way we want to play, we cannot think of anything other than winning it all. We have to fight for all competitions and be a team with a clear attacking identity. A dominant, aggressive team with very high ambition.”
The midfielder also praised one current and one former Barcelona player in this interview. Regarding Gundogan, he claimed him to be:
“Very intelligent player, who receives the ball very well and is always oriented towards the area where space is.”
Similarly, he described his predecessor in the pivot position, Busquets, as:
“An example to follow for everything he did on the field.” “All midfielders look up to him as a reference. His ability to bring calmness and balance to the team is admirable. The consistency and high level of performance he showed in every match were also remarkable. It is a great challenge to occupy this position after his departure.”
Oriol Romeu has set high standards for himself after this media talk. The Cules will now look forward to him performing in the upcoming matches, especially once the 2023-24 season starts. Hopefully, he can adapt to Xavi’s ideas soon enough, bringing more stability and balance in Barcelona’s midfield.
