Despite their poor form in recent matches, FC Barcelona are still within close reach of the top spot on the league table. Although the team was far from perfect, Xavi’s men took the full three points from their last La Liga match against Real Sociedad, which can be highly helpful in the latter days of the league.
Barcelona are only two points behind their fierce rivals, Real Madrid, and four points behind the league leaders. Curiously, the top position in the league is currently taken by Girona, a club that is normally not considered one of the contenders for the title.
Girona keeping doors open for Romeu
However, the fellow Catalonian club fully deserves to be at the summit of the league because of their performances. Girona is having a historical season in La Liga, despite losing one of the integral parts of their midfield last summer, i.e., Oriol Romeu.
Romeu is now playing at Barcelona, but he has not been forgotten by his former club. As SPORT has reported, the Sporting Director of Girona, Quique Carcel, recently appeared in an interview, in which he clearly stated that Girona has its doors open for their former midfielder:
“Personally, I’d love it one hundred percent… He brought magical things to us… Many players have told me that he taught them how to compete.”
While Carcel admitted that things might be complicated because of the involved contracts, he did not see Romeu’s return to Girona as unviable.
Romeu struggling at Barcelona
While he started this season at Barcelona very well and quickly became a starter for Xavi, Romeu has been struggling in the last few matches. He has shown a weakness in retaining possession in the last few games, and opposition teams target him to gain the ball whenever they get the opportunity.
Thus, if Xavi can get another competent midfielder to play in the pivot position, Barcelona may very well be open to the idea of the Spaniard rejoining Girona in the future.
