FC Barcelona have gone through some great difficulties in recent seasons due to their financial troubles. The Catalan club, despite all its glory and prestige, remains a shell of its former self in certain aspects. A clear aspect that Barcelona continues to struggle with is balancing out their books.

Due to this, there have been consequences imposed upon the club by Financial Fairplay. Limited signings and expenditure have led to a rather slow summer transfer window for Barcelona, but the Catalan club continues to persevere somehow with the help of Hansi Flick and his faith in La Masia to pull through.

However, that does not mean that it was only the club that was willing to do whatever it took to keep the ship afloat. In fact, even the players themselves were asked to cooperate and help out if they could with deferred or reduced payments in their contracts.

Some players definitely took that initiative, especially the captains at one point, but it was understandably a big ask for the players. Yet, as highlighted by Fabrizio Romano, a certain Barcelona ace who is not even a team captain came forward himself to offer up a sacrifice to help the club if it needed it, as confirmed by club president Joan Laporta:

“(Robert) Lewandowski, I have a special mention for him. He is a player committed to the club. When he heard that we had to make some efforts to reach the Fair Play to register players, he told us he could lower his contract in order to help the club.”

This update truly comes as an eye-opener of sorts in regards to the Polish ace. Despite the criticism that he has received from time to time on the football pitch, this revelation from Joan Laporta will surely be something to reflect on in terms of his commitment to the club.

Despite belonging to Poland himself and having previously played a significant part of his career in Germany, the 36-year-old Barcelona ace was willing to make a sacrifice to help the club that he remains committed to. A great gesture, and one that was never publicly flaunted before by the player himself.

However, this act shows clear dedication to the club and a commitment to his profession. Irrespective of what happens on the football pitch, it is at least clear to see that Lewandowski himself remains committed to Barcelona as much as he possibly can be.
