Despite not playing in the same league, Bayern Munich had emerged as a bogey team for FC Barcelona in the past decade. Unable to beat them in multiple encounters, things changed when Hansi Flick’s men trashed Vincent Kompany’s team 4-1 a few weeks ago.

It was a rude shock for Bayern Munich to realize they were not invincible against Barcelona. Hansi Flick’s teams demonstrated just how formidable they can be against strong opposition, following the Bayern performance with an even better 4-0 victory against Real Madrid.

It is a bitter pill for Bayern Munich to swallow, and it seems to be a bitter pill for German club legend Lothar Matthäus as well, who has been vocal about the situation. As quoted by SPORT, he claims that Bayern will not lose to Barcelona 4-1 again.

The German legend has pinned the blame on a new coach and new system and this is his reasoning behind the fact that Barcelona cannot repeat the feat. He said:

“Bayern will not lose 4-1 to Barça again. It’s clear that after two months with a new coach and a new system, not everything is functioning perfectly. After the defeat in Barcelona, Kompany showed the team where they went wrong and what adjustments needed to be made.”

With all due respect to Matthäus, it seems he may be overlooking the fact that Barcelona has also introduced a new coach and a system that is working wonders. Therefore, it is not a fair comparison to suggest that Bayern were unprepared, which led to the result.

Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona has demonstrated this season that they can compete with Bayern Munich at their own game. It is worth noting that Kompany employed a tactical setup similar to that of the Catalan club; however, Flick’s men executed it more effectively.

Perhaps next time, Flick’s Barcelona can win 5-1 to show Lothar Matthäus that this result wasn’t a fluke. Regardless, it’s important not to get ahead of ourselves; let’s wait and see how the team continues to perform this season.
